A short explanation of tension-type headache

OCtober 25, 2025

Tension-type headache is the most common type of headache, and it usually develops when muscle tension, stress, fatigue and emotional tension build up. The pain is most often bilateral, tightening or pressing in character, and patients feel it as though “a band were tightening around the head”.

These headaches are usually mild or moderate in intensity, they do not worsen with physical activity, no nausea or vomiting is seen, but slight sensitivity to light or sound is possible. The pain can last from 30 minutes to several days at a time.

Among the main causes, tension in the neck and shoulder muscles, stressful situations, sitting at a computer for long periods and lack of sleep are listed.

In treatment, mainly rest, managing stress, correcting posture, gentle physical exercise and short-term use of simple analgesics (paracetamol, ibuprofen, etc.) are used.

In chronic cases, psychotherapy, relaxation techniques and normalising the sleep routine give a long-term result.
